Childhood Trauma

# Childhood trauma counseling for adults.

Some people grow up in homes where they had to be careful, or grown-up, or invisible, long before they were ready. Years later, life can look fine on paper while something underneath still runs the show: in relationships, in sudden reactions, in a body that never quite relaxes. This page is about how childhood trauma can show up in adult life and how trauma counseling at Shepherd's Heart approaches it, carefully and at your pace.

## Trauma that came from how you were treated.

Not all trauma comes from a single terrible event. Developmental trauma is laid down over years by the way you were treated: criticism that never let up, neglect, unpredictability, having to parent your own parent, or never being safe to say what you felt. Because it was the water you swam in, it can be hard to recognize as trauma at all. It may simply feel like who you are.

## How it can show up now.

Childhood patterns tend to follow people into adulthood. You may notice relationships that keep ending the same way, trouble trusting anyone who gets close, a harsh inner voice, reactions that seem bigger than the moment, or a body that stays braced. Some people feel a persistent gap between the life they've built and the person they experience themselves as being.

None of this means something is wrong with you. It means your nervous system learned to protect you in a place where protection was needed. If those patterns now show up with your own kids, the page on breaking generational patterns (https://shepherds-he.art/specialties/breaking-generational-patterns) looks at that side of it.

## Stabilization comes first.

The biggest reason trauma work goes badly is moving to the hardest memories before a person has the resources to handle them. PTSD and trauma counseling (https://shepherds-he.art/service/ptsd-trauma-counseling) here starts with stabilization: understanding how trauma works in the brain and body, building concrete regulation skills like grounding and breathwork, and making sure you have support outside sessions. For developmental trauma, that first phase can take a while. It isn't wasted time. It's what makes the deeper work safe.

## You don't have to retell everything.

Trauma-informed work approaches memory carefully: a small slice at a time, moving back and forth between hard material and something steadying, and paying attention to what happens in the body. You set the pace and can pause at any point. You may or may not ever tell the whole story out loud, and the work doesn't depend on it.

## EMDR and depth work.

When specific memories keep intruding, EMDR therapy (https://shepherds-he.art/service/emdr-therapy) can help the brain finish processing them without detailed retelling. It begins with assessment and preparation, including a Calm and Peaceful Place exercise you can return to when things feel intense, and each session is closed down so you leave settled. John is trained in EMDR, not certified. First-time EMDR work tends to go better in person at the Siler City office (https://shepherds-he.art/locations/siler-city).

Psychotherapy (https://shepherds-he.art/service/psychotherapy) offers slower, longer-arc work on where patterns came from, with psychodynamic work at its center.

## Realistic time frames.

Healing developmental trauma takes time. For complex or developmental trauma, a year or more of steady, usually weekly work is a normal expectation. Trying to rush it tends to backfire, because pushing too fast can leave you dysregulated between sessions. If you're a young adult just starting to look at your childhood, the young adults (https://shepherds-he.art/who-we-help/young-adults) page may also be useful, and individual therapy (https://shepherds-he.art/service/individual-therapy) explains the weekly format.

## How to start.

Request a free 15-minute consultation. You don't need to share details of what happened; a sentence about what you're noticing now is enough. John will tell you honestly whether he's the right fit and how he'd suggest beginning.

If you're ready to look at the format of the help, see PTSD & trauma counseling (https://shepherds-he.art/service/ptsd-trauma-counseling) or EMDR therapy (https://shepherds-he.art/service/emdr-therapy). Not sure where to start? Request a free 15-minute consultation (https://shepherds-he.art/contact) and we'll figure it out together.

FAQ

## Common questions.

### Is it trauma if nothing terrible happened?

It can be. Developmental trauma often comes from what happened over and over, or from what didn't happen, rather than from a single event. An assessment can help sort out what you're carrying, without asking you to prove anything.

### I've done trauma therapy before and it made things worse. Why would this be different?

That often means processing started before your nervous system had the tools to handle it. Here, stabilization comes first, and harder material is approached only when you can work with it and close it back down.

### Can this be done by telehealth?

Much of it can, for anyone physically located in North Carolina at the time of the session. Some trauma work, especially first-time EMDR, tends to go better in person.
