Anxiety in Adults

# Anxiety counseling for adults.

Maybe it's the 3 a.m. replay of every conversation from the day. The dread before Monday. The way your chest tightens when your phone buzzes. Anxiety can live quietly for years and then get louder with a new job, a new baby, or a teen who stops coming home on time. This page explains how adult anxiety can show up, how therapy at Shepherd's Heart works on it, and what to expect.

## What adult anxiety can look like.

Anxiety isn't always panic attacks. It can look like constant worry, rumination that won't switch off, trouble sleeping, irritability, muscle tension, avoiding calls or places, over-preparing for everything, or a sense that something bad is about to happen. Some people are high-functioning on the outside and exhausted on the inside from managing it. If it has started to shape your choices, it's worth working on.

## When parenthood turns up the volume.

For some adults, anxiety gets sharper once there are kids to worry about. Every fever, every late text, every school email becomes a possible emergency. Parenting asks you to tolerate a lot of uncertainty, and an anxious mind treats uncertainty as danger. When anxiety starts leaking into how you parent, through over-checking, over-protecting, or snapping from stress, working on it helps the whole household. Parent counseling (https://shepherds-he.art/service/parent-counseling) is built for that overlap.

## Cognitive behavioral therapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the main tools for anxiety and rumination. It helps you notice the thought loops that feed anxiety, test them against what's actually happening, and practice different responses. Much of the change happens through small, repeated practice between sessions. The guide on how CBT works (https://shepherds-he.art/guides/how-cbt-works) explains the approach in plain terms.

## Working with the body.

Anxiety isn't only in your thoughts. It's in your breathing, your shoulders, your gut. Mindfulness and somatic grounding help settle your nervous system in the moment, so you can respond rather than react. These skills are simple to learn and take practice to use when it counts, which is why they show up between sessions as well as in them.

## Avoidance keeps anxiety going.

Avoidance is anxiety's favorite strategy. Skipping the call, leaving early, saying no to things you'd actually like to do: each one brings relief and shrinks your life a little. Part of the work is approaching what you've been avoiding in small, manageable steps, so your nervous system learns those situations are survivable. It happens at a pace you agree to, not by throwing you in the deep end.

## When trauma sits underneath.

Sometimes anxiety is a nervous system still reacting to something that happened years ago. When a specific memory or set of memories is driving current symptoms, EMDR (https://shepherds-he.art/service/emdr-therapy) may be part of the plan, inside a broader course of care. John is trained in EMDR, not certified, and uses it when it's clinically appropriate.

## How the work goes.

Individual therapy (https://shepherds-he.art/service/individual-therapy) here is weekly and 50 minutes, in the Siler City office (https://shepherds-he.art/locations/siler-city) or by telehealth (https://shepherds-he.art/telehealth-north-carolina) anywhere you're physically located in North Carolina. The first sessions focus on assessment and a plan. For a defined issue, such as an anxiety flare tied to a specific change, three to six months of weekly work is common. Chronic, longstanding anxiety usually takes longer, often around a year.

John doesn't prescribe. If medication is worth discussing, that conversation belongs with a physician, and therapy and medication aren't either/or.

## How to start.

Request a free 15-minute consultation and describe what your anxiety looks like day to day. John will tell you honestly whether he's the right fit. If your anxiety is tangled up with exhaustion from parenting, the parent burnout (https://shepherds-he.art/specialties/parent-burnout) page may describe what's happening too.

If you're ready to look at the format of the help, see individual therapy (https://shepherds-he.art/service/individual-therapy) or parent counseling (https://shepherds-he.art/service/parent-counseling). Not sure where to start? Request a free 15-minute consultation (https://shepherds-he.art/contact) and we'll figure it out together.

FAQ

## Common questions.

### Is my anxiety bad enough for therapy?

If it's shaping your choices, costing you sleep, or wearing you out, it's worth addressing. You don't need a diagnosis or a crisis to start.

### Will I have to stop worrying completely?

No. Some worry is useful. The goal is for anxiety to stop running the show, so it becomes information you can respond to rather than an alarm you obey.

### Do I have to talk about my childhood?

Not unless it's relevant. Some anxiety is mostly about current stress and thought patterns, and the work stays there. If older experiences are driving it, you'll decide together how far to go.

### Can anxiety therapy happen by video?

Yes, for adults physically located in North Carolina at the time of the session. Telehealth often works well for adult anxiety work, and it can make weekly sessions easier to fit around work and family.
