Defiant & Oppositional Behavior

# When every request turns into a fight.

Getting shoes on is a battle. Homework is a battle. Screen time ending is a battle. You've tried sticker charts, taking things away, calm voices, loud voices, and by dinner you're the one apologizing to your kid because you finally lost it. This page is for parents of 5–12 year olds who are stuck in daily power struggles and are starting to wonder if they're the problem.

![A warm, softly lit counseling office with a notebook on a wooden desk.](/__l5e/assets-v1/a6335817-db5c-4228-bd0b-f2bda6b04cf6/Shepherds-Heart-Counseling-52.jpg)

## Defiance vs. dysregulation.

These look identical from the outside and are very different underneath. A defiant kid has weighed the situation and decided the fight is worth it — usually because the fight itself gets them something (your attention, control over an outcome, delay of a task they don't want to do). A dysregulated kid is flooded. Their nervous system has jumped past the point where they can access reasoning, and the yelling and thrashing is what a small brain does when it can't cope. The reason this matters is that the response is different. Defiance responds to structure and follow-through. Dysregulation responds to co-regulation and safety first, structure later. Treating one like the other is a big part of why nothing has worked.

## Why consequences stop working.

Consequences work when three things are true: the child cares about the thing being taken away, the consequence lands quickly, and the adult can hold it without escalating. In most households by the time a parent calls me, at least one of those has broken. Usually it's the third one. The parent is exhausted, the consequence gets delivered mid-yell, and it gets negotiated down within the hour because the parent doesn't have the reserves to sit through the meltdown that follows. The child learns that the consequence is theatre — loud, but not real. So they stop responding to it. That's not a manipulative child. That's a child accurately reading their environment. We rebuild the whole system: fewer consequences, smaller consequences, and consequences that you can actually hold when your kid does what they're going to do next.

## What's actually reinforcing the behavior.

Every behavior that keeps happening is being reinforced by something. In a home where a kid melts down every day, the reinforcement is almost always inadvertent — attention that only comes during blowups, tasks that get dropped when the fight is loud enough, a parent who gives in at 90% resistance so the child learns to push to 95%. We walk through your actual week — what happens before the flashpoints, what happens during, what happens after — and identify the loops that are keeping the pattern alive. Then we change them one at a time. This isn't blame. Every parent in the world accidentally reinforces the wrong thing. The point is to see it and shift it.

## Rebuilding authority without escalating.

A lot of parents in this situation feel like their authority in the house is gone and the only way to get it back is to be louder or harsher. That's almost never the right move. Kids don't defer to volume; they defer to predictability. A parent who follows through on small, boring things ninety times in a row builds more authority than a parent who explodes once a week. We work on your tone, your posture, how you say the thing, and — most of all — what you do in the next thirty seconds after your child says no. That thirty-second window is where the household is either rebuilt or lost again. It's coachable and it does not require you to be a stricter or scarier version of yourself.

## When to look at what's underneath.

Sometimes a child's behavior isn't primarily about the household at all. Undiagnosed ADHD, an anxiety disorder, a learning difficulty, sensory processing issues, or a history of adverse experiences can all show up as defiance, because a kid who can't do what's being asked will look like a kid who won't. If the pattern doesn't fit what we're seeing at home, we may recommend an assessment. I don't diagnose in the first meeting and I'm careful about labels — we use them when they help a family get the right kind of support and we don't use them when they're just going to sit on a chart. Part of the work is sorting out what's the child, what's the environment, and what's the interaction between the two.

## How the work actually goes.

Most of the work is with you, not your child. That surprises people. In this specialty, sessions are typically parent-only: we look at the week, pick one or two loops to change, and you go back and try it. The next week we look at what happened and adjust. Sometimes we bring the child in for a targeted piece, sometimes we don't. Kids under 12 generally do better when the adults around them change first. Intake is $195 and sessions are $155. In-network with Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC. All sessions are with clients physically located in North Carolina.

FAQ

## Common questions.

### Is my child manipulating me?

'Manipulation' is a loaded word for something most kids are doing on autopilot. Your child has learned what works in your household to get needs met or avoid discomfort — that's not calculated, it's conditioned. Once the conditions change, the behavior changes. We treat it as a pattern to reshape, not a character flaw.

### Do you meet with the child or with me?

Usually mostly with you. For most 5–12 year olds, the fastest way to change what happens at home is to change what the parent is doing in the pinch points of the day. We may bring the child in for specific pieces of work, and if we think the child needs their own therapist we'll say so and help you find one.

### Will you tell me I'm a bad parent?

No. If you were, you wouldn't be reading this page. Parents who show up trying to figure out what to do differently are not the problem — they're the solution. My job is to be direct about what's working and what isn't. That's different from judgment.

### What about the behavior at school?

School behavior and home behavior don't always match, and that's useful information. If the child holds it together at school and unravels at home, that's often a good sign about school and points us toward what's happening in the family system. If they're struggling in both places, we may recommend looping in the school and possibly an assessment. Either way we work with what's showing up.
