Parents of Young Children

# The years everyone calls precious and nobody calls hard.

Two to nine is the stage where the physical demand on a parent is at its highest and the recognition for the work is at its lowest. It's tantrums in a grocery store, a bedtime that took ninety minutes for the sixth night in a row, a sibling war that resets every morning, and a Sunday afternoon where you love them completely and would give a small organ to be alone for an hour. This page is for parents in that stretch who are running on very little and are quietly wondering why nobody warned them.

![A warm, softly lit family space with soft wooden furniture and low light.](/__l5e/assets-v1/a6335817-db5c-4228-bd0b-f2bda6b04cf6/Shepherds-Heart-Counseling-52.jpg)

## The math nobody wrote down.

A small child needs an adult in the room for most of the day. Multiply that by the number of children under 10 you have, subtract sleep, subtract everything else that has to happen for a household to keep running, and the number of hours in a week where you are not on duty is roughly zero. That is not a personal failing. It is the actual math of this stage. Most of the work at the beginning is naming that out loud so you stop treating your exhaustion as evidence that you are doing it wrong.

## Tantrums are not manipulation.

A three-year-old on the floor of a supermarket is not running a strategy on you. They have hit the limit of what their nervous system can hold and the only tool they have is volume. A seven-year-old who melts down at homework is not being lazy. They are somewhere between overwhelmed and unwilling, and telling those apart is most of the parenting job at this age. We spend time on the difference and on what you actually do in the ninety seconds after the meltdown starts — which is where the household is either steadied or set on fire.

## Sleep is a whole-family problem.

Almost every family I meet with kids under nine has some version of a sleep problem — either the child's or the parent's or both. And it eats everything. A kid who is under-slept is more reactive during the day; a parent who is under-slept has less capacity to hold that reactivity; and the two of them together create the household you're actually living in. Fixing sleep isn't a magic trick and it isn't a single method — it's a set of small, repeated decisions that most parents have never had permission to prioritize. We work on it because everything else runs downstream of it.

## The sibling war.

If you have more than one child under nine, the siblings are part of the picture whether they're in the room or not. They compete for you. They fight over things that don't matter to make sure they still exist to you. One of them is loud and gets the attention; the other is quiet and gets less than they need. Part of the work is helping you see the shape of that dynamic in your own house and making small structural changes — one-on-one time that is scheduled and non-negotiable, rules of engagement between siblings, a way to intervene that doesn't reward whoever screams first.

## The guilt of not enjoying it.

A specific kind of grief lives in this stage. Everyone around you keeps telling you these are the years you will miss, and some part of you already knows that's true, and another part of you can't wait for bedtime. The gap between those two things becomes a private guilt that most parents never say out loud. We say it out loud in therapy. Not to fix it — you're not going to enjoy every minute of parenting a small human, and you don't have to — but to stop spending energy hiding it from yourself.

## How the work goes.

Because John does not see children under 12, the client here is you. Sessions are with the parent (or both parents when possible), and the work is a mix of talking through what your household actually looks like day to day and adjusting the specific pinch points — mornings, transitions, bedtime, the drive home. Sometimes we recommend a separate therapist for the child; sometimes the work with the adults is what changes the house. Consultation is 15 minutes and free. Intake is $195, sessions $155. In-network with Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. NC clients only.

If you're ready to look at the format of the help, see [parent coaching](/service/parent-coaching) or [parent counseling](/service/parent-counseling). Not sure where to start? [Request a free 15-minute consultation](/contact) and we'll figure it out together.

FAQ

## Common questions.

### My child is 5 and having big behavior problems — do you see them?

John doesn't see children under 12 directly. For a 5 year old, the fastest path to change is usually the parenting work, and we'll do that with you. If a child needs their own therapist, John will help you find one who specializes in that age.

### Will you tell me I'm doing it wrong?

You will hear direct feedback on what is and isn't working. That's not the same as being told you're a bad parent. Parents who show up to figure out what to change are not the problem — they're the ones actually doing the work.

### My partner and I fight about how to parent. Is this the right place for that?

Yes. That disagreement is common at this stage and it's one of the biggest predictors of household stress. We work with one parent or both, and we don't try to make you parent identically — we work on parenting compatibly.

### How long does this take?

Some parents come for six to ten focused sessions on a specific pinch point (sleep, mornings, tantrums) and stop there. Others stay longer to work on the underneath — the exhaustion, the marriage, the history they didn't know they were bringing into the room with their kid. We're honest each month about whether the work is worth continuing.
